VistA is an enterprise-wide, fully integrated, fully functional information system built around an electronic health record. It is easily customizable and can be configured to fit any type of healthcare organization, from clinics and medical practices to nursing homes and large hospitals. VistA has been named one of the best healthcare information systems in the world by the Institute of Medicine .  VistA has been deployed in thousands of healthcare facilities, both United States and international ( Egypt , Latin America , Asia and Middle East )

Because VistA is available in the public domain, there are no license fees to use the software. This makes VistA an affordable electronic health record system for healthcare organizations. Commercial or off the shelf Hospital Management Systems which would have cost Application (license fee) and cost of Implementation. But by Implementing VistA will eliminate the cost of Application (as it is available in public domain) or product just the cost of implementation which would reduce the cost by roughly around 8 to 12 million US dollars.

There are about 47 modules integrated into the VistA and each module is associated with the other modules in terms of functional and technical features. Here is a detailed view how the modules are associated which would be implemented by Prolific Technologies, Inc.

Prolific Technologies Suggests the implementation of modules in the following phases, however some of the modules may not be required depending upon the functionality of your hospital or may require additional custom applications.  

Phase 1: VistA Foundation Software Modules  

The basic VistA software modules that were to be initially implemented includes:

·        Admission/Discharge/Transfer (ADT)

·        Inpatient Pharmacy

·        Outpatient Pharmacy

·        Laboratory

·        Master Patient Index (MPI)

·        National Drug File

·        Patient Demographics

Phase 2: Additional VistA Software Modules  

Other VistA software modules to be implemented as soon as possible to take advantage of using the VA Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) include:

·        Clinical guidelines & reminders

·        Consult requests & reminders

·        Discharge summaries

·        Graphical lab trending & results

·        Health summaries

·        Order entry

·        Problem lists

·        Progress notes

·        Vitals and other measurements  

Phase 3: Additional VistA Software Modules Desired  

Other VistA® software modules desires to possibly implement in the future include:

There are number of additional software modules that will need to be acquired and implemented that currently are not a part of the VistA system, such as:

Phase 5: Future Enhancements
